Do you struggle with negative self-talk and negative thoughts? It often leads to feeling insecure or needing the approval of others, wanting to control others, resentment, anxiety or depression. These negative habits are what hold you back from living with joy, and the peace God intended for you. How you think about yourself can make you feel unworthy of love, “less than” others, and has a huge impact on your relationships, your work, and your purpose in life.
The truth is, many Christians struggle with this despite having a relationship with God. Past hurts and disappointments can weigh you down. But here’s the good news: your worth does not come from those things! Your worth comes from God.
The Bible tells us in Psalm 139:14 that we are “fearfully and wonderfully made” by God. This means that you were created with dignity, great care, and purpose! Additionally, Ephesians 2:10 says that you were created with strengths and gifts to use for God’s glory.
If you are a Christian, your identity is in Christ. That means you are set free from the power of sin and shame (John 8:36). You are alive in Christ Jesus and clothed in His righteousness (Romans 8:1). Your past mistakes, or what others have said about you, do not define you.
Embracing these truths allows you to step into the fullness of who you are meant to be – a child of God, empowered to live with purpose and joy.
Here are some steps you can take to start embracing your identity in Christ to avoid negative thinking and self-talk:
- Think about your core beliefs. Where do your beliefs about yourself come from? Are they rooted in what God says about you, or are they influenced by other things? Claim your identity in Christ.
- Spend time in God’s Word. The Bible is full of verses that tell us who we are in Christ. Meditating on scripture renews your mind and firmly establishes what God says about you.
- Surround yourself with godly people. The people you spend time with can have a big impact on your self-image. Find a good church and a community of believers who will support you and encourage you on your journey.
- Seek professional help. If you’re struggling to overcome negative beliefs about yourself, a Christian life coach can help you to develop a healthier self-image and live with joy, peace, and confidence in who God has created you to be.
Remember that you are not alone. God is with you every step of the way. He loves you and wants you to live a life of freedom and joy from negative self-talk and negative thinking.
